This course is intended for staff who have never been trained in CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention) or whose training is more than one year old (i.e., certification lapsed).


This course will cover the basic principles of Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention and provide practice in strategies to avoid injury.  A model of crisis development will be presented along with proactive responses to de-escalate the situation.  Techniques to avoid injury will be practiced.

This course involves physical movement.  Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes.

If enrollment does not meet a minimum number, the class may be canceled or combined with another class.

Class Notes:

This is a one day class addressing the basic information of Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).  Topics include the Crisis Development Model, Verbal and Nonverbal Intervention Strategies, defensive moves, and Post-Crisis considerations.  Holds and Restraints are included in the TEAM training component; they are NOT part of this training..

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing which allows free movement, as part of the class involves physical movement.  Half an hour is allowed for lunch..

The course is designed for staff who have not been previously trained in CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention) OR for those whose certification has lapsed (more than one year).  If you trained prior to the 2014-15 school year and have not renewed your certification, you should attend this course.

Does this course include restraints?

No.  The emphasis of this course is on preventing crisis escalation and avoiding injury.
